A Drone Flew Over an Island Abandoned for 40 Years—Then Its Camera Captured Something Unexpected

The island had been empty for nearly four decades.

Its old buildings were slowly disappearing beneath vegetation. The harbour was quiet, the pathways had cracked, and the windows of the abandoned houses reflected nothing but the sky.

Locals rarely visited it.

There were no permanent residents, no shops, and no regular boats travelling to its shores.

That was why Lucas, an aerial photography enthusiast, chose it for his next drone project.

He wanted to capture the island from above and document how nature had slowly taken over the abandoned settlement.

But when he reviewed the footage that evening, he noticed something he had completely missed while flying.

A figure.

Standing on the roof of one of the island’s oldest buildings.

An Island Frozen in Time

Lucas had first heard about the island from a friend who collected photographs of abandoned places.

Decades earlier, it had reportedly been home to a small community of fishermen and their families. A decline in local industry and changes in transport had gradually emptied the settlement.

Eventually, the remaining residents relocated to the mainland.

The buildings stayed behind.

Lucas arranged a short boat journey and carried his drone, camera equipment, and spare batteries.

The island looked exactly as he had imagined.

There were narrow paths between old houses, a small harbour, and a weathered building that appeared to have once served as a community centre.

The silence was remarkable.

He spent nearly two hours flying the drone over the coastline and rooftops.

Nothing unusual happened.

At least, that was what he believed.

The Figure on the Roof

Back at his accommodation, Lucas transferred the footage onto his laptop.

He began reviewing each recording, checking the angles and adjusting the exposure.

Then he paused.

On the roof of the old community building, something appeared to be standing near a chimney.

It looked like a person.

Lucas zoomed in.

The shape was tall, upright, and positioned in a way that resembled someone looking toward the sea.

He checked the timestamp.

The footage had been recorded at 3:16 PM.

He replayed the sequence several times.

The figure seemed to be in the same position across multiple frames.

But there was another detail.

A small rectangular object appeared beside it.

Could someone really have been living on the island?

Returning to the Island

Lucas decided to return the following morning.

This time, he brought a friend and planned a more detailed survey of the building.

As the boat approached the shore, they noticed something they had missed during the first visit.

A narrow trail appeared to lead from the harbour toward the community building.

The vegetation around it was shorter than the surrounding grass.

That suggested the path might have been used or maintained at some point.

They followed it carefully.

The building’s entrance was partially blocked by fallen wooden panels. Through one of the broken windows, they could see an empty room with old furniture and several shelves.

There was no obvious sign of anyone living there.

But outside, near the rear wall, they found a small metal container.

Inside were a few ordinary objects: a folded cloth, a plastic bottle, and a notebook whose pages had become damp.

The notebook contained dates and brief handwritten observations about weather and tides.

None of this proved that someone was currently staying on the island.

Still, it made the place feel less abandoned than it had appeared from the boat.

The Rooftop Mystery

They used the drone again, this time approaching the rooftop from several directions.

The figure was nowhere to be seen.

Lucas compared the new footage with his original recording.

The rooftop object looked different depending on the camera angle.

From one direction, it resembled a person. From another, it looked like a weathered structure covered in dark material.

His friend suggested it might be an old ventilation fixture or a damaged rooftop ornament.

Lucas wasn’t entirely convinced.

They also noticed a reflective metal sheet near the chimney. At certain angles, it created the impression of movement.

The mystery was becoming more interesting, not less.

What the Camera Actually Captured

After examining the footage frame by frame, Lucas realised the figure was most likely an optical illusion created by a combination of rooftop equipment, shadows, and the camera’s perspective.

The rectangular object beside it appeared to be part of the building’s old ventilation system.

The trail, notebook, and container remained unexplained, but they could have belonged to a maintenance worker or a previous visitor.

Lucas shared the photographs with an online community interested in abandoned locations.

People offered different interpretations.

Some thought the island had been visited more recently than official records suggested. Others believed the rooftop figure was simply an unfortunate combination of shadows.

Lucas never claimed to have discovered a hidden resident.

But his footage raised an interesting question about abandoned places.

When a location has been empty for decades, how much of its history can still be found in the little things left behind?

And how many details do we miss when we only look at a place from a distance?
