The Abandoned House That Had a Light on Every Night—But Nobody Had Lived There for 27 Years

At exactly 11:47 every night, a light appeared in the upstairs window of an abandoned house.

It lasted for precisely thirteen minutes.

Then it disappeared.

For years, the residents of Willow Creek had grown accustomed to the strange sight. The house stood at the end of a narrow road, surrounded by overgrown grass, a rusted iron fence, and trees that seemed to lean toward its windows.

Nobody remembered seeing anyone enter or leave.

The property had been empty for 27 years. Its previous owner had reportedly moved away, and the house had remained untouched ever since.

Yet every night, without fail, that upstairs light returned.

Most people dismissed it as an electrical fault. Others believed someone was secretly living inside. A few simply refused to walk past the property after dark.

But one resident, a retired electrician named Martin, decided he wanted an explanation.

The First Strange Detail

Martin had lived across the street for almost twelve years. He had watched the seasons change, neighbours come and go, and the abandoned property slowly disappear beneath climbing vines.

He first noticed the light during a winter evening.

At 11:47, a warm yellow glow appeared behind the upstairs curtains. Martin assumed someone had purchased the property. But when he checked the following morning, the front gate was still locked, the windows were covered in dust, and the mailbox was overflowing with old letters.

He began observing the house.

Night after night, the same thing happened.

11:47 PM. Light on.

12:00 AM. Light off.

Not once did the timing change.

Martin eventually started recording the phenomenon on his phone. After several weeks, he noticed something even stranger: the light always appeared in the same room, even though the house had multiple upstairs windows.

A Visit Nobody Expected

One Saturday afternoon, Martin approached the property with his neighbour Daniel.

The gate made a loud metallic sound as they pushed it open. The front door was locked, but a small window near the kitchen appeared slightly open.

They did not enter. Instead, they looked through the glass.

The interior was covered in dust. Furniture remained exactly where it had apparently been left decades earlier. A clock hung crookedly on the wall, and a dining table still held what looked like an old newspaper.

There was no obvious sign of recent activity.

Daniel suggested the light might be caused by a reflection from a nearby building. Martin wasn’t convinced.

The two men walked around the house and noticed something unusual near the rear wall: a small metal utility box, partially hidden behind bushes.

It appeared much newer than the rest of the property.

The Explanation Nobody Had Considered

Martin contacted the local utility company to ask whether the abandoned property still had an active electrical connection.

The answer surprised him.

The house had been disconnected from the main supply years earlier.

So where was the light coming from?

A few days later, Daniel returned during daylight with a camera. He photographed the upstairs windows and the surrounding trees. While reviewing the images, he noticed that one of the windows had a small reflective panel positioned behind the curtain.

Could sunlight be charging something during the day?

They investigated further and discovered a narrow opening in the roofline. From a particular angle, it aligned with a small solar-powered garden light installed near the back of the property.

The discovery offered a possible explanation, but not a complete one.

Why was the light timed so precisely? And who had installed the device?

The Old Photograph

Martin continued searching for information about the property’s previous owner.

An elderly resident eventually showed him an old photograph taken nearly three decades earlier. It showed the house during a family gathering.

In the upstairs window, a small lamp was visible.

The resident explained that the family had a tradition of leaving that particular lamp on for a relative who frequently returned home late from work.

Nobody knew whether the tradition had continued after the family moved away.

Martin never discovered who had installed the newer lighting arrangement. The mystery was never officially solved.

But the nightly glow eventually stopped after the property was cleared.

Even today, some residents remember watching that window at 11:47 PM, wondering whether the house was empty after all.

Sometimes, the strangest mysteries are not about what is hiding inside a building. They are about the little details people leave behind—and the questions nobody thinks to ask.
